den Haan Enterprises Limited is a family owned commercial greenhouse operation located in the Annapolis Valley. The company recently restructured to include three new young shareholders. This event marked the commitment of third generation Dutch immigrants whose grandparents entered Canada through Pier 21 in the early 1950's.
In our 5 acres of growing space, there are three aspects to the company: English Cucumbers, Hothouse Tomatoes and flowers. den Haan's produce is available through the Atlantic Superstores and Save Easy as well as den Haan's Garden World.
Food Safety
den Haan's is currently in its second year of following the Canadian Horticultural Council's On Farm Food Safety Program. This program is based on the principles of the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) program.
On Farm Food Safety practices require all procedures of production, harvesting, handling, and shipping to be monitored and documented. This ensures product is handled under safe and sanitary conditions to minimize any possibility of contamination that would compromise the safety of our product. Each year audits are conducted by third party auditors to ensure all standards are being met and certification is given.
den Haan's Greenhouses also use the "Integrated Pest Management" system within our greenhouses, which means NO SPRAYS.
What is integrated pest management (IPM)?
Integrated Pest Management is an approach to pest management designed
to manage pests and diseases with as little damage as possible to people,
the environment and beneficial organisms.
Strategies that prevent pests and diseases are the cornerstone of IPM. The
IPM grower uses all possible crop protection techniques including
monitoring, crop sanitation, cultural and mechanical control, and the
introduction of beneficial insects and mites. For more information on this system, click here.
